NEW POST @BaseballWay.com: Jackie Robinson Day 2012

Image

Hello again, baseball fans! It’s that time of year again. The 2012 MLB season is in full swing and today, April 15 is Jackie Robinson Day.

I plan to spend the day in my Dodger hat, watching MLB Network and Fox Sports for all the festivities of the day!

As if you didn’t know, I compiled a short bio of Jackie Robinson and what he has done for the game and our culture. It’s posted now at www.baseballway.com

Here is an excerpt concerning the relationship between the Brooklyn Dodgers and the Los Angeles Dodgers from the West side point of view.

I can only imagine how exciting it must have been to watch Jackie, especially with his style of play. He brought an aggressive speed to the game I’ve only read stories about but, today’s fan might take for granted.

As a Dodger fan, Jackie Robinson’s legacy is that much more special to me. I’m well aware of the pain that comes to Brooklyn over losing the most beloved team in New York. I recognize what happens when a city really identifies with it’s team. They become part of the family. They are representing your block, your burough, your hood, your way of life. It’s never easy letting go when the love is so strong.

In case you are a Brooklyn-ite who still dreams of Ebbets Field, for what it’s worth. We’re taking good care of them in Los Angeles. I can only speak for me but, as a Los Angeles sports fan I feel like we received a gift.

There was a time when we were all the way out here with the closest Major League Baseball game thousands of miles away.  We looked east for our Heroes of The Diamond and until “the move” could never feel that sense of pride in a team the way you all felt about “Them Bums”.

I bet alot of you have moved on. Maybe most of you are too young to really feel anything either way. I love Chavez Ravine, L.A. and Southern California but, I feel it’s important to let you know that supporting the Blue, White (and Red) always makes me think of Brooklyn, of Jackie Robinson and Pee Wee Reese and everything we’ve accomplished together.

Kershaw for 2011 MLB Cy Young!

Every once in a while, the MLB Facebook account asks a question about the game that catches my attention. This morning they posted a pic of our ace in the hole with this:

MLB on FaceBook

MLB on FaceBook

“You Decide: The NL Cy Young race will come down to _______ vs _____ “

Almost none of the replies were for Kershaw. Here’s how I responded:

“Wake up, Facebook! Its Kershaw vs Kershaw!

The only pitcher better than Clayton Kershaw in the NL is, yep you guessed it, Clayton Kershaw!

The kid delivers every appearance. You can’t argue with his numbers. The fact that the Dodgers are sub-par record-wise should only benefit his bid for NL Cy Young.

Where others would have already given up on the season, #KShaw shows up in a big way consistently. The only pitcher in MLB who can beat CK at anything is himself!

Go Dodgers!

What do you say?
Is there really anybody more deserving of the Cy Young in 2011 than “This Kid”?

i Still Expect 2011 PostSeason for the #Dodgers. 8/17/2011

2011 NL Wild Card as of 8/17 via ESPN.com

2011 NL Wild Card as of 8/17 via ESPN.com

Okay, #Dodgers are 55-66, 13.5 GB in the #NLWest and 16 GB in the #NLWildCard race with 51 G ’til 162.

The last 10 games, LA is 4-6 and Lost 2 in a row. If there’s any silver lining it’s this. The Dodgers are losing heartbreakers! It probably doesn’t feel so good but look at this analogy:

A boxer is knocked out in Round 3. Its ugly. Even supporters feel doubt. The fights over. Even Disney couldn’t craft enough hope for this story…..There’s somethin’ to cry about.

The Dodgers are not being KO’d. These games are not ending without a fight! In Philly, we were within 1 run of the hottest team in the NL all 3 games (except the 5-3 L). Most of August (W or L) were separated by no more than 4 or 5. That’s Slam Range!

If anything, we’re losing decisions that can VERY easily go the other way. Yea “heartbreakers” for the other team! We can hang with the best of ‘em still!

We just swept Houston! I didn’t see a lot of buzz about that….

If the PostSeason started today PHI, MIL and ARI would hold division, Wild Card to ATL.

Starting AUG 19, we have 24 of the 49 or so remaining games vs the NL West. That means, in the race for the West, we have plenty of opportunity make up some ground.

Our toughest series’ will be @STL Aug 22-24 and @ATL Sep 2-4 but, the reason I don’t like to rely too heavy on stats and probability is because an entire season can be reversed in the blink of an eye: a “ground-ball with eyes” or a “dying quail”, to quote Bull Durham.

Look, in the NL, there are 12 teams ahead of the Dodgers with only 4 playoff spots available. Its an obvious long shot but I’ve said before:

“I’ll take a long shot over no shot, in a heartbeat”

We’ve got the Brews again tonight from Milwaukee at 5pm. Tune in!

As long as we have a game to play we are just as entitled to the W as any other team, regardless of numbers.

Besides, everybody knows that YOU are the biggest factor in our team’s success. Buy tickets, wear your gear, listen to Vin, root for THIS Home Team!

Stay faithful, stay supportive, Stay Blue.

more.

Verlander is solid. Plenty of guys have triple-digit heat but, only the great ones keep control of it for 6+ innings per game.

Detroit Tigers – Justin Verlander 2011

He’s got plenty of swag now. Will it last the same way and for how many years after his credible performance, thus far, in 2011?

His team can help him win. Offense and Defense are alive in Detroit’s clubhouse if all is timed right, Justin Verlander will win “more” games this season.

Hey Baseball fans!

I’ve been very busy since Spring and a lot of it has to do with our favorite sport! Let me give you the run-down:

My cousin was married this past March in Las Cruces, NM. I live in Murrieta, CA and figured out that on my way to Cruces, I would be passing through the heart of MLB Spring Training in Arizona!

So with some careful planning, I would be able to visit CamelBack Ranch and catch a Dodgers game in a place I’d never been before! Very exciting!

On my way to AZ and NM

Desert Hot Springs, CA. On my way to AZ and NM

There is some bad news, though. In the shuffle of memory cards and family computers and what not, my Spring Training pics were erased! There is a program that claims to restore lost photos. If it works, I’ll be sure to let you photographers know.

I’m still in NM now and for the past 3 months my Blackberry Style has replaced my PC (It is serving me well, btw). I plan on returning to my “office” in September so, keep your fingers crossed that my photos are still alive! In the meantime, I was able to catch a few flicks with my phone.

Dodgers/White Sox

CamelBack Map

My first experience at CamelBack Ranch was a great one. Even despite the fact that the Dodgers played later in the evening in Peoria, I still enjoyed walking the peaceful complex and witnessing 2 simultaneous “rookie squad” games between the White Sox and Dodgers on the practice fields out back.

It felt like being at a Little League sports complex because of the multiple games going on but, especially because of how intimate the scene was. I could practically steal the Ump’s wallet! That’s how close! Juan Pierre even passed by in a golf cart. lol It was cool!

After a little rest, I found myself in the Peoria Sports Complex, Spring Training home of the San Diego Padres and Seattle Mariners. I can’t express how much I wish I had my photos to illustrate the beauty. My words can’t do it justice! It’s a beautiful baseball place.

Spring Training home of the SD Padres and SEA Mariners

I saw Ichiro Suzuki and Matt Kemp play ball, among others. This was also the day of the Charity Game between the Dodgers and DBacks in Tucson so not everybody was there. I had a nice time, nonetheless.

It was a short visit but it was a nice one. If you’ve never been to Spring Training in either AZ or FL and you call yourself a baseball fan, you owe to yourself to check it out. Its a brand new vibe compared to your regular season trips to the park. You won’t regret it!

Thanks for reading. Again, I apologize for the lack of pics. If we’re lucky, my mmc will be restored and I will update this post with more photos!

I’ve spent most of the season here in Las Cruces so, I’ve missed lots of Dodgers baseball but I have more pics and experiences to share with you! I’ve been to Apodaca Park and visited the San Antonio Missions minor league facility. Stay tuned!

Go Dodgers!

Until next time.

Hello Again

It’s Finally Here!

I hope you’ve been enjoying your spring! Birds are chirpin, flowers are bloomin’ and baseballs are zoomin’ again!

This game makes me feel like a kid forever. I still feel like I’m re-discovering the game all over again. If you remember, I was gone from everything about the game. I didn’t even have “a team”. I was just a kid who loved the game. 2008 was magical for me. I found a new love for America’s Game and it’s done nothing but grow since then.

The Dodgers had a down-year last year but things are always lookin up at this time of year! Our rotation looks young, but experienced. Kershaw and Billingsley are two of the best young pitchers in the league. Add the experience of Lilly, Kuroda and Garland and we’ve got the best starters around. The bullpen is okay and I have faith in Jon Broxton finding his rhythm again. Overall, pitching looks good. :)

The line-up looks a little bit stronger with the addition of Uribe and returns of Barajas, Ethier and Kemp in the middle, I exect to see some more offense. Not to mention the new mentality of Don Mattingly and Davey Lopes working with the base-runners, we may not see as many Homers but, Dodger Baseball should be that much more exciting to watch.

I’ll be following the Blue Crew all year long at @IEDodgerBum on Twitter but be warned, I tweet ALOT! I try to give updates on the games, watch cool videos, share interesting blogs and I retweet some of the most passionate Dodger fans!

If you like baseball but don’t want to see Dodgers all over your timeline, that’s okay. You can follow @BaseballWay for less frequent and more league friendly updates around the baseball world.

===========================================

I’ve been wearing a new “hybrid” contact lens which has worked great so far! So, look for more pics and more baseball stories at BaseballWay.com.

I’ll be in Arizona this week for a game, not sure which but I will visit @CamelBackRanch for sure and there will be plenty of pics and video to look at.

Go Dodgers!

Peace

The field is sacred ground and should be
treated with respect at all times. (I can’t help but refer you to that
incident between A-Rod and Dallas Braden in Oakland over the pitcher’s
mound earlier this year.) With this comparison, it’s not difficult to
see the ways of the soldier, the samurai and slugger in the same light.

be it playing a musical instrument, painting or martial arts, they all
require the same basic elements of focus.

My Life – The Baseball Way

Balls and Strikes. Fair or Foul. Out or Safe. These are the values that shape my life. Baseball has always been there for me. When I was diagnosed with Keratoconus, baseball didn’t let me quit. She pushed me to be her most passionate young player. When I was separated from her by the doctor when I was 16, she had faith in the old addage, “If you love something, let it go.”, sure that I would one day return to her grace.

On a daily basis, I’m reminded of the difference between right and wrong. Reminded, only because it was her I learned from. In the beginning, it was just a child’s game, baseball, nothing more than something to do in between sleep, school and dinner. She always knew better, handling our relationship with patience and waiting for me to discover what she really meant to me.

Even in my early years, I had a bond with her that nobody else I knew could even understand. She was more than just rules and activity. I understood what it is to respect her and what it is exactly that she will reward. Perhaps, before I should have, she showed me what it is that she will punish.

The game of baseball is more to me than her label. Major League Baseball is how she presents herself to America, to the world. I love the way she does it, but the love I have at the deepest points of my imperfect heart is for what she means to the individual  stripped of all money and earthly possessions, of all social and idealistic pride.

The power she demands over the man who must kneel before her, before wisdom and truth, in the face of honor and justice.and be counted either Good or Evil is what I believe to be “The Baseball Way.”

This blog is my place of worship. I believe in the Church of Baseball and all of it’s commandments. This is where I come share my testimony. I am accepting and respectful of all people and cultures. Anyone can play baseball and perform well.

Everyone is allowed to enjoy it.

I will post entries that are relevant to the way baseball is a reflection of society in America and what it does and can do for the world. Feel free to share you experience, stories, pictures and ideas in the comments. I love to talk baseball.
